Ball slewing ring

Ready-to-install ball slewing ring bearing with housing rings and connection holes.

A ball slewing ring, not to be confused with a crossed roller bearing, is a type of rolling bearing that is used to support loads and torques in axial and radial directions. It consists of an inner ring, an outer ring and a set of balls that run between the rings in special raceways.

The ball slewing ring is characterized by its ability to carry large loads while ensuring high precision and rigidity. Compared to other types of rolling bearings such as angular contact ball bearings or deep groove ball bearings, the ball slewing ring offers a higher load capacity with a lower overall height and weight.

Ball slewing rings are used in a wide range of applications, particularly in industrial automation, robotics, the machine tool industry and the construction machinery industry. They are also used in aerospace and military applications where high load capacity and precision are required.

Unlike a spherical plain bearing, a ball slewing ring allows full rotation and is used in applications where parts have to rotate around a fixed axis, such as cranes, excavators or tower cranes. Due to their high precision and rigidity, ball slewing rings can be used in applications where accurate positioning and control is required.

Overall, ball slewing rings offer high performance, low profile and low weight, making them a popular choice in many industries where precise control and high load capacity are required.

Frequently asked questions about ball slewing rings

What is a ball slewing ring?

A ball slewing ring is a ready to install slewing ring with balls as rolling elements. The inner ring and outer ring have mounting holes and are bolted directly to the adjacent construction. It absorbs radial forces, axial forces and tilting moments at the same time.

What is the difference between a ball slewing ring and a roller slewing ring?

In a ball slewing ring, the rolling elements touch the raceway at a point, whereas rollers have line contact. Ball slewing rings therefore have a low frictional torque and are suitable for many standard applications. Roller slewing rings such as the Franke type LVG absorb higher moment loads and tilting moments.

Which types of ball slewing rings does Franke offer?

Types LVA and LVB have housing rings made of steel, with the LVB designed for higher load ratings. Type LVC is designed as an angular contact ball bearing for high axial loads. Types LVD and LVE have housing rings made of anodised aluminium and are intended for weight critical applications.

In which sizes are ball slewing rings available?

Type LVA is available with diameters from 100 mm to 1,800 mm. The operating temperature ranges from minus 20 to plus 80 degrees Celsius, briefly up to plus 100 degrees Celsius. For different requirements, Franke provides individual advice on design and use.

Where are ball slewing rings used?

Typical areas of use are industrial automation, robotics, machine tools, rotary tables, construction machinery and automated guided vehicles. Ball slewing rings are suitable wherever large diameters, high precision and a low overall height are required.
